A Message for the BDC Family…
Dear BDC Families,
I wanted to reach out to you in this moment when trauma and anguish sweep our country. Systemic racism and social injustice have stained the character of this nation since its beginning. We are at an inflection point, and how we face it matters.
Balance Dance Center is a place where I and all our instructors believe in the value of diversity. We strive to celebrate the qualities that make our students unique and special. The studio is a space where we come together through dance to create, to express, and to connect. We use our art form not only to create beauty, but also to address the inequities of our world.
As we navigate these uncertain times, we will not always be able to protect our children from the harsh realities of our world, but we can at least provide a safe space for them to explore their creativity and grow. BDC is here to teach our students the value of dance as a tool of reconciliation, community, and responsibility. We will continue to encourage our students and help them to grow in resilience and confidence. We will show them by our example that people from different backgrounds can coexist without fear and thrive in a community that we choose to build with love.
Times of unrest often inspire art, and these times are certainly providing plenty of source materials. I can’t wait to be back in the studio again choreographing and dancing with our students. Hopefully, that time will come soon. In the meantime, I encourage everyone to have courageous conversations and look out for one another. Because change starts with us, and it starts now.
With love and appreciation,
Michelle
